24 june 22 Update

 Good evening everyone,

I hope you are all well and have been enjoying the recent hot weather, despite the weather being a little damp today it's good to have someone else to water the garden for a change.

Firstly many thanks to all who came along to the NGS open garden at Norchard Manorbier, to be honest I didn't expect such a beautiful garden, and the weather and cakes made it a bit special.

If there's enough interest, we could go back for a further visit later in the year, so please get back to me if you are interested please, we would require twenty plus to make it happen.

On the 13th of August we are planning a Summer Show at the village hall, the sections include: Cookery - Preserves - Art - Photography - Craft - Flowers - Floral Art - Garden Produce - Children's Section. This is our first attempt at a live show, and hopefully will build on the successful Virtual Shows undertaken during lockdown.

The purpose of the Summer Show is to bring people together post Covid and to show off the talent we have in our community, so please make every effort to take part.

Who knows, in the future we may be awarding prizes and trophies, but as this is our first attempt there will be certificates on offer for those placed first to third place.

All entry forms should be emailed to Sue01.meg@gmail.com or posted to Sue James Meadow Croft, Amroth Road, Llanteg, Narberth, Pembrokeshire, SA67 8QJ by Thursday the 11th of August.

All exhibits can be delivered to the hall on either Friday the 12th of August and between 7 and 8pm or before 11am on Saturday the 13th of August.

The show will open to the public at 2pm on the Saturday and there will be an admission charge of £2 per adult with children admission being free, this includes some refreshments.

The Schedule of Classes and Application Form is attached.

However, this does mean we won't be able to take online images of exhibits, but if anyone wishes to send in an art entry long distance, then please post it to Sue James, Meadowcroft, Llanteg, Narberth, SA67 8QJ.

We are also trying to support Ludchurch Hall and in particular their Summer Gardening Show which is due to take place on Saturday the 6th of August at their new hall, more information to follow when we receive it.

So if you're a judge or you wish to exhibit your entry in both shows, then you could pop along to Ludchurch Hall as well as Llanteg Show?

Also Gardeners Question Time radio program is being recorded at the Queens Hall Narberth on the 28th of June - get in touch if you want more info on tickets.

8 May 2022 update

 Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the fine weather and busy out in your gardens, or perhaps on the beach taking in our lovely coastline?

Our next gardening visit is on the 13th of May and from 11am onwards, with a talk with Joseph Atkin in the afternoon. If you are coming along, then can you please let Pauline and I know as soon as you can.

The group prices are as follows:

• Groups of 10+: £8.40 per adult
• Groups of 45+: £8.25 per adult
• Children under 16: Free of charge

The guided tour of the Gardens with Head Gardener Joseph will be paid for out of existing Gardening Group funds. Whilst the entry fee is to be paid for by yourselves. 

Also, the Kilgetty in Bloom Committee are looking for three judges to view/judge the entries on Wednesday 13th July.

10 March 2022 update

Good afternoon everyone,

Thanks so much for coming along to our gardening group talk last night, and really appreciate your support.

In addition, It was so encouraging to see so many smiling faces back in the hall.

I'm hoping that you enjoyed yet another informative and entertaining talk by Paul and Liz O'Neill. Hard not to really!

Thanks to those who brought along old plant pots, which Paul & Liz appreciated and these will help with their charitable work.

The next talk, which is the last of our winter program, is with Jake Rayson on the 6th of April. I will update you nearer the time.

Thereafter, the plan is to visit various gardens throughout the summer months. 

However, I would appreciate your input as to what gardens you would like us to visit, and also what would be your preferred day to visit these places?

Personally I will be looking at the following gardens: Aberglasney, Llwyngarreg, Abergwili, Picton Castle, plus some of the gardens in the NGS flyer I sent in a previous email.

Also if there is a desire to have two garden visits per month, then please let me know. 

With regard to our finances. The £2/head entrance fee is covering the hall rental with a small surplus, so I can't see any reason to change this at the moment.

8 March 2022 Update

 Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are all well and looking forward to getting on with your gardening, once the lighter evenings are with us again.

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but thanks so much for coming along to the talk with Piers Lunt last month. It was a very interesting talk, from yet another of the very talented head gardeners we have in the area. l'm sure we're looking forward to visiting the Tywi Gateway gardens later in the year. 

Our next talk is next Wednesday the 9th of March and at 7pm, and I expect like us you're looking forward to Paul and Liz O'Neill from Llwyngarreg and their talk entitled "Growing Acid Loving Plants".

If you have used plant pots you don't want, then can you please bring them along for Paul and Liz. They use them for plant sales, which goes to finance their garden at Llwyngarreg. Which in turn raises money for charities. Also there will be some plants on sale on the night.

Joseph (Aberglasney) has given us a tray of Cleome ‘Rose Queen’ seedlings for our garden group. They are ready to be pricked out, so Adele will bring them to Wednesday’s meeting. So please bring along small containers.

Our talk on April the 6th is with Jake Rayson and is titled "Community Forest Gardens", although I will confirm this at a later date.

As for Covid, the WAG restrictions have now been relaxed, although if you wish to wear a mask and socially distance, then please do so. Since whatever you are comfortable with, works for us all.

As far as covid is concerned: Please carry out an LFT before hand, then sanitise your hands on entering the hall, wear a face covering and adopt social distancing whilst in the hall.

 Good afternoon everyone, 

As far as the weather today is concerned, it's certainly not the best, but at least we have the hope that better days are ahead. So time to order those seeds and plants perhaps?

Firstly, many thanks for attending the talk with Aberglasney Head Gardener Joseph Atkin last Wednesday. As usual Joseph was a fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm, which all goes to inspire us to get gardening, I hope!

The speaker will be Bryony Gardner and the talk relates to Hydroponics. We don't have any more detail than that at the moment, but will get back to you when we do.

 Good morning everyone,

I hope you are all well and looking forward to Christmas with your families, and hopefully a better year ahead.

Although from a positive perspective, looking forward, the shortest day is on the 21st of December, so less darkness and more light days ahead.

This is subject to any changes made by the WAG and Central Government.

At this point, there is no requirement for passports, but social distancing and face masks within the hall will apply.

 Good morning everyone,

With regard to the gardening talk last night.

Many thanks to Carole & Peter for making this such an enjoyable and lovely evening and providing a most interesting talk about the History and Medicinal properties of the Monarda.

Similarly, many thanks to all who came along to our first gardening talk since those wonderful pre-Pandemic days!

I appreciate it's not easy to meet during these times, but it was good seeing you all, and thanks for your positive feedback.

1 Nov 2021 Update

 Good afternoon everyone, 

I hope you are all well and enjoying what has been a warm dry day, and thank goodness yesterday's high winds are behind us all! Lets hope the rest of the week is much the same as today's weather was?

Apologies for not getting the minutes of our last meeting on the 15th of October to you earlier, but life even for the retired old folks can be a busy one.

Can I thank all of you who came along to the Botanical Garden on the 23rd of October. The weather was again kind to us, and Nigel and Liz made our visit a more enjoyable one with their very interesting walk and talk.

These are the main points discussed at our meeting:

Apologies for absence from: Dawn Sanders, John James, Trish Cormack, Carolyn and Mike Brotherwood.

• Pauline gave us a very interesting update on our Pollinator Project. The raised beds are in place at the Mountain Chapel {thanks to Ken} and the plan is to have top soil delivered for these beds in the coming days, this will allow further planting of pollinator plants. In addition, some shrubs have been planted at the Clay Pits and some fruit trees are on order for delivery in November. The bug hotel was to be purchased from funds, but now, thanks to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Trust they will provide the bug hotel which is to be placed opposite Stanwell. It was agreed that if there was an overspend of the grant money, then this would come out of the Gardening Group funds. Pauline thanked her Pollinator working group for their support and also thanked Paul Webb at Tavernspite Garden Centre for his donation of plants for the project.

• The Virtual Summer Show was discussed, and it was provisionally agreed that we would have a real Summer Show in the village hall in 2022. This show would take a similar format to our previous virtual shows and include some electronic entries where practicable, the latter would allow support from far and wide. The show would take a lot more organising and the need for a committee, along with sponsorship from local businesses. It was agreed that we retain the virtual certificates for the successful entrants, this would be more environmentally friendly and reduce costs. Our thanks go to Ruth and her judges for all their hard work in making this year's show such a successful one.  http://llantegshow2021.blogspot.com/

• It was agreed to go ahead with Winter Talks at the Village Hall and that a list of talks would be sent out soon. Additionally, it was agreed to hold the talks on a Wednesday evening as an alternative to a Friday. These talks/meetings would be subject to WAG Covid legislation and guidance.

• It was agreed to have Summer Walks and Talks and therefore a list of dates would be sent out soon.

• It was agreed that presently there was no requirement for a membership fee, but that there would be the usual charge of £2 per person for anyone attending the Winter Talks. Furthermore it was suggested that we have fundraising events, should there be a need to do so.

• The Maintenance of the Common Public Areas is continuing and a suitable date and time is to be circulated when the weather conditions allow. Although, if anyone would like to carry out any work at these areas and at their convenience, then this would be greatly appreciated.

A brief discussion took place regarding the possibility of renting and or purchasing land suitable for allotments. It was agreed to gauge the interest in allotments within the community and to approach other organisations that operate allotments for advice.

8 June 2021 Update

 Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are all well, and enjoying the warmer weather and more importantly your gardens.

Can you please let me know if you are coming along to Aberglasney this Saturday, you don't need to reply if you can't make it, since I completely understand that life is busy.

The plan is that we meet at Aberglasney between 10am and 10:30am, then walk around the gardens or have lunch, then around 1pm Joseph will provide us with a walk and talk around this beautiful place.

The entry price will depend on the numbers, so hence the need to know how many are coming along.

The cost of the talk is £70 and we will pay for this out of existing funds, you only need to pay the entrance price.

1 June 2021 Update

 Good evening everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoyed the sunshine over the past few days, let's hope that tomorrow's weather is just a blip?

Firstly, well done to everyone who battled the weeds and spread the stone chips at the Old School Garden last Friday.

Appreciate it's an ongoing battle with the weeds and in particular the brambles, but at least the work you've undertaken is a big step forward.

Thank you all for your efforts.

19 May 21 Update

 Good evening everyone,

Firstly many thanks for coming along to Llwyngarreg for the walk and talk with Paul & Liz, and I hope that you enjoyed the day and found inspiration from this garden.

With regard to the planned clean up at the OSG, it looks like the weather on Friday is going to be wet and windy, so I've decided to defer the clean up until the following Friday the 28th of May and at 5pm onwards, or please come along at any time that's best for you.

Apologies for this, but this is the sort of work we could do with your help with:

Painting the wooden gates.

Raking and weeding the path's.

Weeding the dry stone wall.

Weed and bramble removal from the open areas. Most of this work is weeding by hand, since strimming will do more damage to wildflowers and saplings... 

Spreading slate chippings in the vicinity of the new seating area.

6 May 2021 Update

 Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are all well and looking forward to a little more freedom in the coming months, with the vaccine program offering optimism for us all.

Thanks to everyone who attended our zoom meeting, I appreciate zoom is not the most invigorating way of communicating, but it keeps us informed and engaged, which is very important for our wellbeing...

Finances: Mary Megarry our Village Hall Treasurer is progressing the opening of a Bank account for LGG and under the umbrella of LVH accounts, more information to follow. Also, the maintenance money from ACC has been transferred over to LVH and will then be moved across to LGG account, many thanks to Mary and ACC for arranging this for us. 

Well done to Trish for a really interesting and thought provoking talk on the "No Dig" concept, which we all enjoyed, it's not easy giving a presentation in front of a live audience, but doing this on line without the usual live audience participation is a challenge. Thanks Trish.

With regard to the maintenance of community areas, could you please lend a hand at the Old School Garden on Friday the 21st of May at 6pm for as much time as you can spare please. Also if you would like to go along and rake paths, weed around flower beds, paint the gates at the OSG or Claypits, then please do so at any time you wish.

After all, every little helps make these areas more interesting and pleasing for all our community.

   

As far as the tree planting at Stanwell, we are awaiting confirmation from Amroth Community Council regarding the purchase of the trees.

Future talks in the pipeline include: Chris Taylor Pollinator Project - Jake Rayson Creating a Forest Garden, and it may be possible to have these talks outdoors or when practicable at the village hall. Information to follow when we receive updates from the new WAG.

Dear Garden Clubs,

Further to my previous message, we have organised a "Pop-up" opening on Sunday May 2nd 10am-6pm. We will be serving teas with some safety precautions eg: only 2 people in conservatory at one time, mainly self-service, hand sanitiser available.

Online booking is on the NGS website, but personally I don't quite get it: with our large garden I do not anticipate overcrowding....so don't feel it essential. 

Please, club secretaries, can you forward this to as many people as you can think of!

23 April 2021 Update

 Good afternoon everyone,

16 March 2021 Update

 Good evening everyone,

I hope you are all well and looking forward to positive changes in the coming months, and let's hope at least the weather is warmer?

Firstly, many thanks again for my birthday wishes and gifts, I still can't accept the fact that I've been around for three score years and ten, despite the fact that it looks like longer!

Below are the minutes of our meeting on the 2nd of March, as for our next zoom meeting, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Virtual Summer Show

It was agreed to have a summer virtual show, please see attached document for rules and categories, the email address for all entries is llantegshow@gmail.com

YouTube Channel

Our Llanteg Gardening Group YouTube channel is up and running, and it was agreed that we upload short helpful hints videos to the channel along with zoom talks/meetings.

Maintenance of Community Areas

We agreed to maintain the grounds at the; Old School Garden, Claypits and Mountain Chapel, in return for an annual payment from Amroth Community Council, and the cost of hiring or buying equipment would be paid for by ACC.

Our thanks go to ACC for agreeing to placing new seating at the OSG and Mountain Chapel, the old rotten wooden seats have now been removed from the OSG and the new ones will be installed soon.

Wild Flowers - Fruit Trees/Bushes

All the fruit trees/bushes have now been planted at the OSG and the wild flowers will be sown by Trevor when conditions allow.

Also, a further fifty oak saplings have been planted at the OSG, thanks to Caz for obtaining these for us.

Plant Sharing

Pauline confirmed that some people have come forward to participate in the plant sharing, if you would like to take part, then please contact Pauline on critchlow23@btinternet.com. Although, if you have any surplus plants or are looking for some, then please get in touch anyway.

Tree Planting in the community

Theri suggested we plant a memorable (statement) tree(s) in the community, areas suggested include near the bus stop and on the land opposite Stanwell. With regard to Stanwell, it was agreed to ask Tony Brinsdon if he had a preference for a particular species of tree that could be planted opposite Stanwell. More info to follow.

Finances

Since the Gardening Group does not have a constitution or a committee, then we decided at our previous meeting that we ask Llanteg Village Hall committee to hold any money the Gardening Group has in a subsidiary account and under the control of the officers of LVH, and that Mary Megarry (VH Treasurer) would expedite this as soon as possible. Just to be clear, all money belonging to the Gardening Group shall be held by LVH but for the express use of the Llanteg Gardening Group.

Forming Gardening Club

We agreed to remain as we are and not to set up a formal Gardening Club.

Quiz

We agreed to have a further quiz in April, date and time to be agreed.

Chris Taylor (Warden Coastal Path) is giving a talk to ACC entitled Improving areas for pollinators, I will contact Chris and ask him about giving us a talk in the coming months.

Jake Rayson from Forest Garden Wales is going to create a YouTube video on the subject of creating a forest garden, the charge would be £50 for a thirty minute video, we await a response.

Theri raised the issue of PCC cutting the hedgerows and grass verges at times of the year that can damage habitats, it was discussed that we raise this matter via the community council.

26th January 2021 Update

 Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you are all warm and keeping well, and that you don't have to venture out in this snow/rain, but if you do, then take care.

Many thanks for attending the zoom meeting on the 26th of January and I appreciate the apologies from those who couldn't make it, all in all the numbers are very encouraging.

The following is a brief description of the items discussed, I appreciate it's not easy to debate things properly on zoom, but at least we could see each other, (I've had a hair cut since and locally).

Gardening Visits: It was agreed that we plan for future summer garden visits, but that this would depend on any restrictions from Government and WAG...

Places we may visit: Aberglasney - Abergwili - Stackpole - Llwyngarreg - Panteg - Glynbach plus any other NGS gardens you have a preference for, so if you've any further suggestions, then please email me.

Virtual Summer Show: It was agreed that we continue with a virtual show and try to obtain sponsorship for winners of each category, more information to follow.

YouTube Channel: It was agreed that we contact Jake Rayson about uploading Creating a Forest Garden video to our YouTube channel for all GG members to view at their leisure. It was also suggested that we create our own short videos to upload to our channel, any suggestions please.

Maintenance of Common Recreational Areas: Amroth Community Council has asked our Gardening Group if we are interested in maintaining the grounds at the; Old School Garden, Claypits and Mountain Chapel in return for an annual payment.

It was agreed that we identify what we could achieve with our physical resources and hours required to maintain these areas and feed back at the next meeting.

Although, at the moment the Claypits is being cut by John James and the Mountain Chapel area will be cut by Roger Harries. Also, some annual maintenance is currently being carried out by members of the GG.

Wild Flowers - Fruit Trees/Bushes: The fruit bushes have been planted at the OSG, thanks Pauline, and there are three Apple trees (received from Keep Wales Tidy) which will be planted at the OSG soon.

Plant Sharing: It was agreed that if possible we would grow plants for the coming season and share surplus plants amongst our GG, Pauline will be in contact to ask if you would like to take part, and who's going to grow what, thanks again to Pauline.

Forming Gardening Club: It was agreed to stay as we are and that we wouldn't need an annual membership fee, but simply charge people who attend future presentations/meetings at the village hall.

Quiz: We are planning for an online quiz, so we should be in contact with you soon with dates etc.
